Today we were out choosing the best card for my wife’s father on Fathers Day. He’s an interesting man, a great guy and deserves an excellent card, but as with anyone it’s difficult to sum up a person in the greeting card in the grocery store.
It got me thinking about greeting cards in general. Personally I always said that I would prefer a home made card and the 3.88 that would have been spent on the card. However, I do appreciate a home made card more than I do a purchased one.
I imagine that the average person buys a card from anywhere between 3-10 times a year and at an average cost of about 3-4 bucks for a decent card, that can add up. We’re not talking about retiring after all it is at best an extra 40 dollars a year. I guess the point I’m trying to make is, with some effort, some paper and glue and a pair of scissors, and of course some time and creativity you could just as easily create a personal message that could mean so much more to someone special in your life.
If you’re the creative type there’s literally no end to what you can create. You remember when you were in grade school, melting crayons between wax paper, or drying out flowers to be affixed to a personal mothers day card.
Next time you have a special event give this a try, pay attention to the reaction you get as opposed to the reaction you get with a purchased card. I’ll bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
