Photos and Images to Enhance Your Blog & Posts – Legally

Photos and Images for Your Blog and the Rights to Use Them

A picture is worth a million words. As a blogger I’m always looking for ways to enhance the experience and make posts more attractive and fun for readers while providing helpful quality information.

You can write a post or article that’s stocked full of useful information to a reader but if it’s not attractive or looks overwhelming people will simply leave and move on to the next source. Even if you had the answer they’ve been looking for.

Kings, Bondi Beach, c. 1930s, by Sam Hood by State Library of New South Wales collection

Recently I’ve been reading DoshDosh.com it’s a wonderful site for bloggers to gain new perspective learn tips and trick etc. The posts at doshdosh are usually filled with every detail about any given topic and are usually quite long. I though last night while reading their posts, how do they get people to read all that information. It occurred to me they break the posts down to bite sized pieces and often with completely irrelevant images of random things. I love this technique for several reasons, first because it adds lots of color and it breaks up the page content so well.

Where to get the Images
So where do you get these wonderful and free photos, well there are several places but some are much better than others.

Flikr Creative Commons
The creative commons license allows you to display photos on your website or blog but often has a few restrictions such as you can’t sell the photos or use them for profit. Meaning don’t compile a mass of photos then burn them to a dish and offer them on eBay.

You can also take a look at this section of Flikr dedicated to photo sharing  The Commons

Stock Exchange
I use to use this source more often than I do now as more and more they are becoming a paid service. There are still free photos available for use free of charge.

FreePixels
Very well built and easy to navigate free image website. They offer an excellent selection of quality photos in just about any subject.

Kavewall.com Stock Photos and Textures for free
This is a truly interesting service that allows you to select unique images based on type. Choose electricity, smoke or food and receive high quality free photos for use with your website/blog or design work.

ADigitalDream
A nice selection of royalty free photos by category.

Photogen
More wonderful free photos for you to use.

If you’re still having any trouble locating free photos make sure to take a look at CreativeCommons.org This is a powerful tool that allows you to search all or almost all the creative commons resources.
